How to Fix USB Device Not Recognized In Windows

A very common problem faced while connecting a USB device to a Windows PC is USB Device Not Recognized error. It simply occurs when Windows is unable to detect the device and hence gives an error message.

This issue can happen if these following situations exist:

  • Your USB drive or external drive may be entering selective suspend.
  • Windows may be missing important software and hardware updates.
  • Your computer does not have USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 support.
  • Outdated motherboard drivers.
  • Windows is not updated from long time.
  • Corrupted or outdated USB drivers.
  • Unstable or corrupt USB controllers.
  • Your PC requires an update for issues that can conflict with a USB external hard drive and Windows.

 

Methods to Fix USB Device Not Recognized Issue

First, try out these simple fixes that can help you in resolving this issue:

1. Sometimes a simple restart solves the problem. Just plug out your USB device and restart your PC, then plug it in to see its working or not.

2. Disconnect other USB devices from your PC, then restart and plug in your USB device to see its working or not.

3. Use Windows Troubleshooter. Press Windows + S and then in the Search bar type Troubleshooting and click to open. Click on Configure a device under Hardware and Sound, then click on Next.

4. Update your Windows PC. To update Windows, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update.

5. USB device not recognized error can arise if the USB device has not been ejected properly. To fix this plug in your device into a different PC, let it load necessary drivers on that system and then properly eject it. Now, plug in the USB device into your computer and check.


If the above simple solutions does not work then follow these methods to successfully resolve USB device not recognized issue.

Uninstall and then reconnect the USB device

This method works if currently loaded USB driver is corrupt or unstable.

1. Press Windows + S and in the search bar, type Device Manager and click to open.

2. Expand Disk Drive from the list of hardware.

3. Right-click the USB device with issue, and click Uninstall.

4. After uninstallation, unplug the USB device. Wait for a minute and reconnect the USB device. Drivers will be loaded automatically.

If your issue is not resolved by the above method, proceed to Method 2.

Install latest Windows Updates

Installing windows updates will install latest device driver for your USB device.

1. Press Windows + S and in the search bar, type Windows Update and click to open.

2. Now, click on Check for Updates. After the scan is complete, click Review optional updates.

3. Click the check box next to the updates, then click Install updates.

4. If prompted, review the license agreement and click I Accept.

5. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the updates.

6. If prompted, reboot your PC.


If your issue is not resolved by the above method, proceed to Method 3.

Update USB drivers

1. Press Windows + S and in the search bar, type Device Manager and click to open.

2. Now, click on Scan for hardware changes.

3. Right click on the USB device with Yellow caution mark and click Update Driver Software.

4. Click on Search automatically for updated driver software and let it search for drivers automatically from the internet. After that restart your PC and plug in your USB device to see if the issue is resolved or not.

5. If USB device not recognized issue still persist, then repeat the above steps for all the items present in Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

6. In the Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers and right click on USB Root Hub and click Properties.

7. Go to Power Management tab, uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK.

If the issue is not resolved by the above method, proceed to Method 4.

Reinstall USB controller

1. Press Windows + S and in the search bar, type Device Manager and click to open.

2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right click a device and click Uninstall. Repeat this for each device.

3. Once complete, restart your computer. Your USB controllers will automatically install.


If your problem still exists, proceed to Method 5.

Disable USB selective suspend setting

1. Press Windows + S and in the search bar, type power plan and click Choose a power plan.

2. Now, click Change Plan Settings of your currently selected plan.

3. Click Change advanced power settings.

4. Go to USB settings and expand it, then expand USB selective suspend setting.

5. Click the drop-down menu and disable both On battery and Plugged in.

6. Now, click Apply and then click OK.

If this does not solve your problem, proceed to Method 6.

Restore usbstor.inf file

1. Browse the folder C:\windows\inf

2. Find and cut usbstor and usbstor.PNF and paste it somewhere safe on your PC.

3. Now plug in your USB device. It should work normal.

4. If USB device not recognized issue is resolved then copy the file back to its original location.

5. If the file is not present in C:\windows\inf or the above steps didn’t worked, then browse C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and look for usbstor.inf_xxxxx_xxxxxxxxxx (where xxxx will have some value).

6. Copy the files usbstor and usbstor.PNF to C:\windows\inf

7. Now, restart your PC and plug in your USB device.


If the issue is not resolved, proceed to Method 7.

Disable Fast Startup

1. Press Windows + S and in the search bar, type power plan and click Choose a power plan.

3. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.

4. Scroll down to Shutdown settings, uncheck Turn on Fast startup and click Save changes.

5. Now, restart your PC.

If your issue is not resolved by the above method, proceed to Method 8.

Update Generic USB hub

1. Press Windows + S, and in the search bar, type Device Manager and click to open.

2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, then right click on Generic USB Hub and select Update Driver Software.

4. Select Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer.

6. Now, insert your USB device and check if the problem is resolved or not, if the problem still persists then try the above steps on each item present inside Universal Serial Bus controllers.

7. Restart your PC to see USB device not recognized issue is resolved or not.


If your issue is not resolved by the above method, proceed to Method 9.

Uninstall hidden devices

1. Press Windows + S, and in the search bar, type Device Manager and click to open.

2. Now, expand all the items present in device manager and look for items which might be grayed out or has a yellow caution mark.

3. Right click on the item having yellow caution mark and click Uninstall.

4. Now, restart your PC and plug in your USB device to see the issue is resolved or not.


If your issue is not resolved by the above method, proceed to Method 10.

Install Hotfixes (Windows 7)

Hotfixes resolves a known conflict with a USB device and Windows.

1. Go to the page here. Scroll down and under Update information, click Download the update package now corresponding to the version of your Windows 7.

2. To know the version of your Windows 7, click the Start button, then right click Computer and click Properties.

3. Click Download. The download should start automatically within 30 seconds. If it does not, click Click here.

4. Open the downloaded file and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the download and installation.

5. Now go to the page here. Click on Hotfix Download Available button.

6. If prompted, review the license agreement. If you agree to the terms, click I Accept.

7. Check the box next to your version of Windows 7, then enter your email in the boxes below and click Request hotfix.

8. Now, check your email. You will see an email from Microsoft with a download link for the hotfix. Click the link and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the hotfix.

9. Restart your PC.


If the problem still persists, proceed to Method 11.

Install Motherboard's latest chipset drivers

This method updates your motherboard's chipset drivers, so that your PC will recognize your USB device.

1. Review your computer's documentation which should contain the name of the motherboard manufacturer.

2. Visit your computer manufacturer's support website. Visit here for the list of computer manufacturers' support sites.


3. Navigate their website to find the appropriate drivers for your motherboard. For assistance, contact your computer manufacturer.
